In grad school, our Czech instructor once made us write an essay about what we did over the summer. I hadn’t done anything interesting, so I lied and retold the Cremation of Sam McGee in Czech prose. My instructor said he started to suspect maybe I was pulling his leg when I got to the part about hauling the frozen corpse of my buddy around on my dogsled, looking for a place to cremate him.
