There is a sign I’ve heard of: “Every third salesman will be shot, the second one just left.”

You have to feel sorry for someone like that though, why would he be selling stuff door to door if he could find a real job? Maybe he’s one of the millions out of work now and this is all he could find.

THANK YOU! Exactly what would become of that poor chap if everyone reacted like Andy (and, apparently, like a number of people on this forum, as well)?

Speaking as a telemarketer (which IS a “real job,” by the way), just because you’re not interested, that doesn’t give you the right to mock someone for trying to make a living in the only way that he or she may have available. Not all of us are lucky enough to hold steady, well-paying jobs that don’t have people hating us for trying to do them.

And before anyone accuses me of being overly sensitive and making too big a deal out of a comic strip, I’d like to invite you to do my thankless job for a week and then see how you feel after you’ve had to deal with Andys (and worse) on a daily basis. I’m well aware that most of you are being tongue-in-cheek in your comments, but it still never ceases to amaze me how many of you, who I know would never really behave like Andy in real life, apparently think that it’s OK to be even ruder than he is to sales reps when they call or come to your door. So you DIDN’T invite us to call you (or come to your door) – I would still never treat any of you the way I get treated!

Nothing wrong with Tele-marketing…. I owned a Tele-marketing room for 15 years. Some of my people made more than professional people. It also bought my Viper and much much more. All Legal. Fund raising for the Las Vegas fire department and the police department…

Andy, always the samaritan, did this guy a favor. Now he can get to his next stop quicker and not waste any time talking to Andy. If you were doing this job, would you rather have someone like Andy or someone who let you go on and on, without any intention of buying anything, because they felt sorry for you and didn’t want to be rude?

Since I AM doing this job (albeit by phone rather than door-to-door), MovingtoMilford, I can honestly say that I’ll take the customer who lets me finish my sentences and says no politely at the end over someone like Andy any day.

It comes down to a little thing called courtesy, and if I extend it to you over the phone, shouldn’t you be a grown-up and extend it back to me?

Andy’s reference to the “Welcome” mat reflects his own personal experience within the dwelling. The window salesman is being given fair warning of the kind of hypocrisy that he has had to deal with from the day that he took his marriage vows.

If he knows what’s good for him, he will move on to the next house before Flo comes to the door and launches into another of her abusive tirades, not to mention the possibility of being physically assaulted.

Andy could attest to such treatment, but Flo is likely within earshot and he knows to mince his words in such a situation, so as not be the victim of another vicious beating.

jtpozenel, you really are down on Flo aren’t you? What makes you think Andy the freeloader is so great?

As for this strip as long as we’re talking about people who come uninvited, the same courtesy legaleagle talked about should go for people who come to your door to talk about their faith. Don’t be rude to them either. A simple “I’m not interested” should suffice but say it with a smile hmmm??
