If he doesn’t catch a fish, he could carve a nice one in that hunk of ice. Then he could come up with an interesting story about how he landed the rare Ice Fish. Too bad they didn’t have chainsaws back then.
They did have hammer and chisel back then, stout enough to carve stone (cf. Peter’s “broken heart”, posted a week early yesterday). That will do nicely for ice.
