If I could have invested the same money that the govt. took from me for social security and Medicare I’d be a lot richer now and a lot better off. Now, after they forced the entitlements on us, they’re threatening to cut large chunks of it away. Let’s hear it for the govt. PFFFFFFFT!!!
JRBJ Are you saying if I had invested in a S&P Index I have much more money than believing the government and being forced to invest in the FICA? How could that be? I can’t believe that Roosevelt stacked the Supreme Court so he could cram Social Security down the throats of a weakened nation. This money has been stolen by Congress many times to pay for all sorts of things. You mean they are running out. Why is the money I prudently invested for my retirement still growing.? Am I unAmerican for saving and not trusting those wise men in Washington?
They know you’re dead when you apply for the funeral benefit. Don’t apply and keep getting the monthly checks. They are so FUBAR that they’ll never find out.
jimpow - Nice idea, but the mortuaries are required to notify Social Security, and believe me, they are most efficient when it comes to stopping that monthly payment. (Just went through it this fall when my mom died.)
I’m wondering what will happen when they stop social security because paper IOU’s can’t be cashed by a bank, and everyone wants the money back that they robbed from everyones paychecks all their lives. Social security only pays $500 when you die according to one commercial. Fishstix says it’s less. They won’t even dig the hole for that. Cremation costs around $1000.
Lewreader: Who said anything about an S&P. I’m talking about a diversified portfolio which after 30 years would yield a ton more money than what Social Security and Medicare would yield. And yes, Roosevelt [both of them] were progressives that contributed to the mess we are in today.
The new government wants us to die well before we reach the age to wonder where our socialist benefits are. They even want to raise the retirement age to 75 now. They don’t want to hire you if you’re over 35 anymore, what will people do when they’re 70? Before 35 they don’t take you very seriously, so how do you accumulate enough savings to live beyond your early, earning years?
All the slanted network stations are telling me through their so called “news” and in their agenda driven TV lineup, that big government is the answer to that. That’s what they are striving to achieve. They want America to be one big Kibbutz, with the King of Pennsylvania Ave. living in opulence.
” 2-year freeze on COLA” that’s (For the first time in history, the Democratic Congress will not allow an increase in the social security COLA (cost of living adjustment). In fact, The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation predicts there may not be any COLA for the next three years. Snopes ) 2 long years , Are those ” prescription meds ” over the counter ? I’d love to dream of a thaw , also .

The biggest problem with the whole social security concept is that, when it was started, people collected benefits immediately without ever having paid anything in. If they had based the benefits on your past contributions, I suspect it would be adequately funded today or a least not in as much trouble.
Thanks for the explanations of COLA guys. I don’t know why I couldn’t just figure that one out by looking at it a few more times.
Dahawk is right. Funds being given to various groups of people who never had any business collecting Social Security caused a major part of the problem, but the government using what they claimed with a forked tongue was an insurance policy, as their own piggy bank to pay for other things, leaving the pot continuously empty was always the major looming problem with the whole thing. It’s a perfect microcosm of socialism, and why it has always failed. Socialized healthcare is an even bigger piggy bank, so imagine the end result of the graft and corruption that they already have planned for that?
Sorry, I don’t really talk politics on this comics site. I save that for he editorials somewhere else (not go comics), but since it’s the topic here, what the heck.
