    as ‘our budget is dead’? I understand that if you don’t have a safety buffer is because you have spent it all on if not luxuries, at least superfluous things (not criticizing, I do the same thing). Anyway, you have lived well with your means, to call it dead so far

    instead of tracking everything (like counting squares, which sounds ridiculous), they should ‘categorize’ each thing; so if they are spending something, they should be aware of what type of budget does it come from. If some kind of budget is getting lower, they spend less in that category so it reaches a not zero at the end of the month, and they can change expenses ‘on the fly’. there is also a part for saving, which should not be spent during the month

    To budget or not to budget. … If there is still money left at the end of the money – then you have budgeted. Or didn’t find anything to spend your money on. .Spreadsheets … ok. sometimes. Pick an item – track it for a month. Then figure out how to reduce the cost. And still enjoy what ever that item is….like lunch.
