The first and third Leonardo and van Gogh. (Who Iâm surprised you didnât recognize â van Goghâs self portraits are pretty famous.) Donât know who the one before Rockwell is, though.
As a side note â photographic self-portraiture goes back pretty much to the first days of photography, too. A quick google of âearly selfiesâ brings up a whole bunch of examples (pretty much all mirror-selfies, due to the nature of the cameras).
Difference is a selfie is posting a picture for the sake of promoting yourself. So, narcisism. While others in the past is for technical, artistic, or similar more useful reasons.
T E-J & B at the B: Youse got it all wrong. Except for Rockwell, they couldnât afford to hire models unless they were woking on a commission. Certainly with Rembrandt and VanGogh, they paintd themselves when they had nothing better to do. At times, Rembrandt would paint Saskia, his spouse, and Van Gogh, a recluse, painted his mailman. Thanks, JJ. Your Sunday stuff is special.
Thatâs not a mirror image thatâsâŠwell, I donât know what youâd call it, but just one portion is changed in a way a mirror wouldnât do..In any case, it matches the actual Rockwell painting (as does the glasses/no glasses part).
I love it when a comic artist shows that, whatever the regular strip looks like, he can actually draw well. Bill Watterson was the best, but this one today is a reminder as well.
