Yukoneric, on X-window systems (most everything except Windows), you type “u ü. I assign to the “Windows” key. Similarly, ss gives you ß.

option-u gives the rest of us an ü.

I suspect that they did write (conceive) it that way, but somewhere between the idea and the lettering they lost track of the joke. It doesn’t make ANY sense (gagwise) as here shown.
