I thought it was hysterical! When I was a kid, my Mother used to call the JW’s who came to the door to “save” everyone the “Holy Rollers”. I guess that’s old now but so was Granpaw.
It is certainly a play on “Holy Roman Empire.” Here in Texas, we use the term “Holy Roller” to refer to the Pentecostals. Sometimes the term is used more loosely to speak of any Christian fundamentalist who likes his worship service very loud and emotional.

The Holy Rollers are a Christian Sect found mostly in the South, if I remember correctly. It could be Tennessee/Kentucky hill country.

I’m with Joe. But since Holy Rollers had nothing to do with baseball, I’ll assume it’s a play on ‘Holy Roman Empire.’

Should have found a setup for “Holy Roaming Umpire”
Joe could have said something like “I see him walking all over town.”

Sometimes, they get so wrapped up in their services they go into convulsions and roll around on the floor. Hence the politically incorrect name.
