Although some “experts” claim the lines “If I should die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to keep” might frighten little children, when that prayer was written, it was seen as comforting, rather than scary. In the days before any sort of real medical knowledge, never mind antibiotics, many children were aware of the fact that siblings, parents, and classmates had died in their sleep. We are so fortunate today to not have to even think about those things.

The first part of her prayer was better. More personal and less ritual.

When our little grandson comes to visit, we use this prayer:
Now I lay me down to sleep.
I pray the Lord my soul to keep.
Angels watch me through the night,
And wake me with the morning light!

Almost like me with bladder, only I make it in time. Very good prayer though.
