Ruthie is not as smart as the average bear

Actually, his name is Smokey Bear. They put “the” in the middle back in 1952 to make the song flow better.

It was to be expected. Ranger Smith kept taking away the pic-a-nick baskets away from him.

From 1969 to 1986 Smokey was voiced by Roger C Carmel (Harry Mudd from ST:TOS). He has been voiced by Sam Elliot since 2008.

It gets a bit weirder: Smokey is also wearing the ranger’s pants.

Smokey was a bear cub that was rescued after a forest fire and lived in the National Zoo for many years. The cartoon image was based on the real thing.

Maybe the ranger was already dead. It would explain the shovel.

I guess it never caught on in California.
