I heard from Garfield aniversary books (the 25th and the 30th) that Davis named the dog after some person in an old automobile commercial on the radio or something. What would that book Jon’s reading there say on “Odie”?
Definition: One who lived on or near a triangular field or piece of land. From the Old English gar meaning “triangular land,” and feld meaning “open country or field.”
Surname Origin: English
god’s gift to what? well shades, that explains his love of pizza. Actually, john is for sir john harrington. the flushing toilet was invented in 1596, not by thomas crapper as most people think, but by sir john harrington. he invented the valve that when pulled would release water from a water closet. sorry, jon.
Yochanan (Johanan or John) = “Yah has been gracious”
It doesn’t pay to quibble further about the translitrations and translations; there are alternatives that convey the sense well enough…and I’m not going to go all geeky and give you the original Hebrew letters, although I could. :)
My point is, “Jon” and “John” in English come from two different Hebrew “theophoric” names and mean different things at the root.
One could speculate on what Jon represents as a Divine Gift to the world…laughter, maybe?
Some info on name origins for Garfield, according to the 20th Anniversary Collection (and it looks like other books as well):
-Jon Arbuckle came from an old coffee commercial that Jim Davis heard before,
-Odie came from car dealership radio ad Jim wrote, featuring a village idiot of the same name (Jim: “The name Odie is really an inside joke…it connoted stupidity, at least to me”),
-James A. Garfield Davis, the grandfather of Jim, is where you-know-who comes from.

Jon, you need an “h” in your name like I’ve got, makes all the difference.

I thought it meant toilet, but ‘he who gets beat up for lunch money’ probably describes Jon too.

An alternative to “God’s Gift”, Jon (or John or Jane or Jan) means “God has been gracious”.

If a Hebrew student may step in:
Yonatan (Jonathan or Jon) = “Yah has given”
Yochanan (Johanan or John) = “Yah has been gracious”

“Odie” is just the pronunciation of “O.D.” which is short for “Other Dog” - and before you ask, the “First Dog” is Fido
Jon is short for Jonah which means “he who gets swallowed by fish”
Garfield is short for a cat of his weight

Very cool, NoBrandName! A sign of a long-time Garfield reader.
As you’ll also recall, Garfield isn’t overweight, he’s undertall. :))

Oh, and for those who would be familiar with the name:
-Lyman was first used on Jim’s first strip, Gnorm Gnat.
