I used to have those glasses that darkened in the sun. They also reacted to extreme changes of temperature. You’d go from walking outside on a cold, cloudy day with clear lenses, into a warm, centrally-heated office and find yourself in the dark.
Yes, they will go completely black. When the photo-sensitive lenses were new, someone I knew in the Navy worked in the radio shack. There was a problem and one piece of equipment blew its circuits and created a fireball. The radioman got flash-burns on his face and hands, but his eyes were fine… his glasses had gone black so fast that his eyes were protected.
I use to always wear the photo lens glasses until I switched to contacts. Not too long ago I was thinking it would be nice to have contacts that would do it too.
