Why bother? Upâs gonna win the Best Animated Feature OscarâŠperiod.
I went to a Q-and-A with some of the animators who worked on both Fantastic Mr. Fox and Coraline the other day, and even they say Pixarâs got this one in the bag.
( If it were up to me, Coraline would get the nod,. I really didnât think Up was that good. )
Yesterday, I saw a program consisting of the nominated animated shorts and several that received honorable mentions. If the program is playing at a theater near you, go see it ! All of the cartoons were excellent & the ones that were meant to be funny were VERY funny. (Some of the cartoons are also online.)
Iâm glad to know that Iâm not the only one who thought Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs would get a nomination. Seriously, Secret of Kells? Iâd barely heard of it, and even with a nom, it still isnât playing anywhere near me. Gotta hate that âone week run in LA countsâ loophole.
I think the Oscars would be a lot more fun to watch if there was a segment where the makers of bad movies would be punished. Just imagine Steve Martin being tarred and feathered, or Adam Sandler on the rack. (Sigh)
HA HA HA!!! Great strip, Mark! I think that assuming the awesome (and totally overlooked) âCloudyâ would get a nomination, rather than âKellsâ (I thought it was a beautiful film, but itâs even MORE overlooked - itâs only getting a big run this month) was an understandable âmistakeâ. ;)
Who are these readers that didnât bother to watch most of the other animated films (except âKellsâ, naturally, since it only ran in one or two theaters last year)? They were all great! For SHAME!
Iâm surprised that Lio didnât invite the kids from the Secret of Kells. Needless to say, Carl and Russell emerged victorious from the fight with the award in hand (you canât argue with a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a box office gross of over $293 million.).

I love the Lio statue. âAnd the Lio goes to ⊠⊠. . â How cool would that be?!!
pbarnrob almost 15 years ago
OK, weâve missed many of the yearâs movies (lack of income will do that to you sometimes).
So we have Up, and Princess Frog, but is that a Fox or one of the dogs from Up, and the little girl on the guy are from - ??
Hormigator almost 15 years ago
The Girl is Coraline and the Guy is from âCloudy With A Chance of Meatballsâ
cdward almost 15 years ago
Hey, where are the giant smurfs?
lightblade77 almost 15 years ago
I donât know who the fox is, but I recognize all of the others.
Kamino Neko almost 15 years ago
But Cloudy With a Chance⊠wasnât nominated, and the characters from Secret of the Kells are missing.
(And thatâs Mr Fox, from The Fantastic Mr Fox.)
Kamino Neko almost 15 years ago
Oh, and since I missed cdwardâs post earlier - Avatarâs nominated for Best Picture, not Best Animated Feature, so it doesnât belong here.

Lio should know that cartoons, by tradition, canât be drawn together⊠nyuk nyuk nyuk

Up seriously should win. And is it fair that the frog is being used as a weapon?

If they made a Lio animated feature film, who would play the voice of Lio?
DonVanni almost 15 years ago
But If Mark were to make a film, where would he find the time to keep up with his regular cartoon work? Would Lio or Heart have to suffer?

coraline is one the best and most remarkable films of any type iâve seen in years.

I would think that Lioâs favorite would be The Hurt Locker

You shouldnât invite them over again. At least not on Oscars night.

UP won lol

âAvatarâ doesnât belong in this group - itâs âPocahontasâ meets âDances with Wolvesâ.
Iâve seen all these except âFantastic Mr. Foxâ and they all beat âAvatarâ for script.

And then it all goes black⊠(I mean the cablevision-abc fight (the winner for best drama)) even though it was settlled 30 minutes into the Oscars.

LarryNelson almost 15 years ago
Lio, you need to pick your guests a little better.
comixmaster1000 almost 15 years ago
I hope Lio learns an important lesson from this.

Up vs Coraline vs The Princess and the Frog vs Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs vs Fantastic Mr Fox!
And I donât think Tatulliâs drawing hand wanted him to do anything else.
