Mom: Etc. For years I hovered over my daughter, orchestrating every moment of her life. Then I learned that hovering robs children of decision-making skills and the wisdom that can only come from making one's own mistakes. Now I no longer hover. Cathy out of frame: MOM! Mom: Now I merely open my arms and leap right down into the deep end with her!! Once I was a "helicopter parent". Now I'm an "inner tube parent".

She made a mistake all right. It’s name is IRVING, and YOU didn’t try to talk her out of it, MOM! Sometimes hovering is good.

My mother was much the same, but she lived 200 hundred miles away. Now she is gone. I could use one of her big hugs. :D

mrsflaggedtokingdomcome, Cathy’s mom was too fixated on getting Cathy MARRIED so that GRANDCHILDREN were still a possibility while she was still among the living!

I’m single with no kids. My mom has a bumper magnet (bone shaped) that says “I ♥ my Granddog.”

Cathy’s parents didn’t push Cathy to marry. Cathy and Irving were tired of dating so they both gave in. Before they did, they found every fault with one another. Cathy’s mother saw that. She tried to make Cathy decide if marriage was the right thing to do. They didn’t need to let this turn ugly. They are to blame for this whole mess by not talking her out of it. In complete opposition to the mother’s history, she didn’t make an issue of the In Laws either. Look at what happened with that. At least they haven’t been around. Those In Laws make me never want to get married.

Don’t I recall something about Cathy’s life pre-Irving, or at least during months when Irving was simply not in the picture, and Cathy was a neurotic and insecure single?
Besides Irving and a meaningless parade of male, um, bodies, what were her choices anyway? She and Irving understand each other and they’re not kidding when they share companionship and express love. That’s actually pretty hard to beat.
