I can’t believe it’s still the first day of school, before 8.30, and the erasers are chalky enough to clap!

About the 1940s. My grandmother had a lot of dresses which she made herself, and they all looked like that. A lot of women of her generation were young in the 20s. They gave up corsets and wore the flapper’s “chest band” instead of a bra (a wide piece of stiff grosgrain meant to cover your breasts and make you look totally flat-chested)…and never looked back. And the Women’s Liberationists thought they were the ones who invented bralessness!

I wonder what today’s kids can use to produce the “Calvin Spaceman Spiff Smoke Cloud” when slapping dry marker board erasers together does nothing but make a soft noise. Not to long from now they won’t even have that as classroom more into the digital age and the “board” is projected to the kids viewing station. Oh for the days that a correctly angled bit of chalk would send out a noise that could put the entire classroom in pain. Fly on Calvin the day is young!

Calvin is so highly creative that the adults around him don’t know what to do with him. It would be interesting if Watterson would come back with a grown up Calvin, his creativity un-styfled, still dealing with people in his environment who don’t know how to deal with true creativity. I’m not saying this is likely to happen, but it would be great to have a new Watterson strip.

Sent to the principal’s office, on the first day of school, TWICE within 15 minutes, and it’s not even 9:00. You’re in for a looooooooooooooooooooooooong year, Calvin.
