On a family vacation, we had a wheel come off because the cotter pin broke. My father told us which way to lean and got the car safey pulled over. He fetched the wheel, and started cussin’ because he didn’t have another cotter pin. My mother gave him a bobby pin from her purse. He said it was too brittle, and wouldn’t last – but there being no beter alternative near at hand, reattached the wheel with the bobby pin. That bobby pin never broke, and stayed with that wheel until we traded in the car (Ford station wagon).

He must have been exceeded the warranty; duct tape was once known as the 100 mile tape.

I remember a friend driving more than 200 miles home from a trip with his radiator patched with bubblegum.
