Well, they (Latinos) are… Nothing like old news. In California, whites are no longer the “official” majority…so, I guess, everyone’s now a minority there? (I’m not being facetious here; just saying).

Well, considering that Bezos just hired a staunch Reaganite and cofounder of Politico to be the Post’s new publisher, there’s a good chance this sort of thing won’t be a one-off. (Link is to the Post’s own article.)

Subaltern group would be far more accurate than minority. Seeing as minority refers to numbers, and subaltern relates to relative social standing.

Now? Whites have always blamed their shortcomings on other people, usually the weakest.

Lopez is related to Hernan Cortes, the Spanish conquistador and Vero is related to Dona Marina (La Malinche). Thanks to the Taco guy they all can travel back and forth in time. The Future I leave up to you but in the Past there is: The Golden Age of Mexican film (Dolores del Rio, Pedro Infante, Cantinflas, Katy Jurado, etc..). The boozing Hollywood elite in Tijuana and the Plaza de Toros. Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. The Mexican Revolution with Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata. Staying clear of Texas there is Pio Pico and Zorro in California. Antonio de Padua María Severino Lopez de Santa Anna y Perez de Lebron is good for a laugh or two. And then the pre-Columbian Mexico….

If you’re saying that there are less Latinos in the US than there are African Americans, then you have simultaneously displayed your ignorance and your unwillingness to check basic facts before posting. According to the 2010 census, Latinos make up 16.4% of the national population, while African Americans make up 12.6%. By 2015 this is projected to be 17.8% Latinos and 13.2% African Americans.

Why wouldn’t a Brasilian speak Portugese for a first language?

The here and now is based on historical factors, so it’s quite helpful to know that history and take it into account. Which means, as you point out, taking into account Spanish and French and English and etc. conquests in the Western Hemisphere as well as what went on after that. History is very powerful, and when it’s not addressed, it will often come back to bite you.
