Janis: My flowers really need some rain!
Arlo: Well, they'll be dead in a few weeks anyway!
Janis: So?
Janis: They wouldn't be here at all if it weren't for me!
This is what I would consider a transference of maternal instincts of an empty nester. She brought them into this world and she will see them through it.
It may be a bit woo-woo of me, but I somehow feel that plants are suffering if they need water, etc. Sometimes I alert clerks in grocery stores that their potted herbs are wilting, or restaurant workers that their potted plants appear to be on their last legs (so to speak). The weeks after Christmas can be sad, as lots of people just let their poinsettias die.
