    Why is there a tendency for people to jump to a false dichotomy? And I believe it has become much more common in the last half-century.

    I think he just realized he likes talking to her because she’s smart and is attracted to her because she’s hot. This doesn’t fit his understanding of the world. Moreover, he is suddenly realizing that he likes her – which isn’t supppsed to happen in his world.
