I agree with,”Carmy” ;this is the 2nd time I have seen a unacceptable cartoon strip. I grew up with Hart/BC and prayed for the passing of the earlier. One more time of un-Hart like toons and the strip is history. Have a great day/night everyone.
Yikes, fritzoid & jabo & carmy! I bet you also prayed for the death of your own parents and siblings. For you, the best thing that could have happened would have been the total cancellation of the BC comic strip. Fortunately for the rest of us, a comic tradition since at least 1960 continues in the tradition I remember back then. The irony of the tamed wolf just adds to the humor of the history of man and dogs and cats. Hey fritzoid & jabo & carmi, were you even born in 1960!
I’m a big fan of B.C. going back to my childhood (late 60’s), but the last few years of Hart’s work on the strip were horrible. It wasn’t JUST the strident religious proselytising (although it was that too), but it was the over-reliance on “My town was so small…” gags, “Show me…” gags, and “Wiley’s Dictionary.” That’s what killed vaudeville, folks.
Under Mastorianni, it seems to me that we’re getting more emphasis on the distinctive personalities of the characters again, and a return to jokes that rely on the “modern stone-age” conceit, rather than stuff that might work just as well in “Shoe.”
I think Mastroianni might be specifically trying to shake the strip up, to reinvigorate an old property, to draw in new readers and win back some old ones that (like me) gave up on the strip when Hart got God-bitten.
In the old days, Hart wasn’t averse to a little bit of “risque” or “earthy” humor. I remember an old one from one New Year’s, when the Cute Chick said to Thor “This year I resolve to completely exude sex”. Thor’s sputtering response was “What? How can you completely exclude SEX?!? That’s unnatural!” Chick’s return was “Not ‘exclude’, silly! ‘EXUDE’!” In the last panel, Thor blushes and says “Whew! You had me worried there for a minute…”
Is that a joke that Hart would have dreamed of doing in his later years? Not on your life.
Wow, y’all sure get deep when it comes to dog poop. My little Pom has to read the paper, bark at anyone or thing in earshot and then finishes with a war dance. I love it.

Hm…I think rather that his five-hour mission is “to boldly go where no wolf has gone before”.

B.C. isn’t history, it’s pre-history.
I agree with you on one thing, though. I too was praying for the passing of Hart/B.C. It was pretty awful those last ten years or so…

jaytom, I was born in ‘60. The strip started up in ‘57 if I recall correctly and has been a staple for me since I began reading comics in ‘66.
