    In Japanese folklore, it’s believed that after having been used for 100 years, or if you have a strong attachment to them, inanimate objects can get a soul - and might turn into mischievous specters (Tsukumogami) when discarded disrespectfully.

    There are memorial ceremonies to console broken sewing needles (Hari Kuyou), and funeral services for old and unwanted dolls (Ningyo Kuyou) in which they are thanked for their service and offered to the goddess of mercy.
