Let me guess: Derek has to be coerced into pitching for the Mudlarks. Once he’s on the team, his band makes it big and he has to choose whether to blow off baseball or music. He decides to do both poorly until Gil finds out and gives out one of his pearls of wisdom that always seems to set things right in Milford. The baseball team struggles on the field and doesn’t make the playdowns.
Well, in the writers’ defense (gods, I can’t believe I’m saying this), over the last 50 years, what cliches have the strip NOT beaten to death three times over?
Derek is helping his mom support the family with this gig, his dad walked out on them, his little sister has a chance for college, but its all up to Derek.
What is a high school junior doing working in a Honky Tonk bar. What’s the drinking age in Milford’s state. I know when I played in a bar in the sixties you had to be 18, but we broke the rules also but didn’t get caught.
yeah, there’s ice in that glass … besides, as you can see from Coach Kaz, longnecks are the only way to go in a joint like that … or are those ketchup bottles ……
Let’s all hope Coach Kaz can convince Slim Derek to rejoin the Milford baseball team so we can see him get beat up on a long bus ride after suggesting the team join in on some cowpunk sing along!
Man, too bad Slim got his whole arm stuck in some glue in P1 – looks like he’s trying hard to pull it off. And this storyline doesn’t look as exciting as the Cassie fiasco, unless slim decides to make a pass at Kaz.
Heck of a way to start the high school baseball season! At a bar with underage drinking and pointing with the worlds straight fingers as show for our viewing pleasure n p3
If Milford is supposed to be a small town and the high school is so small, how come Coach Kaz didn’t know why the mulit-talented kid didn’t go out last year? Aren’t coaches supposed to develop a rapport with their players? Oh, wait- that was the last story line!
No, in Milford, there is no coach/player bonding, however, there is a very tight player/janitor bond. Also, very rude of Slim Derek to put a toilet seat lid on the bar table in P2.

In panel #2, what’s that thing coming out of Slim/Derek’s sleeve? It’s much too long to be a forearm unless S/D is some kind of mutant.
