Presumably Jane was driving east on I-10. From LA to Palm Springs would not take all night, so it ought to have been immediately obvious to those waking up in daylight that they had been driving for far too long. Actually, to get 75 miles from Sedona, Jane would have had to turn north at Phoenix on to I-17; “day dreaming” (as mentioned yesterday) through that turn is a bit implausible.
Interestingly, this error couldn’t be made at all going the other direction, as you are stopped at the state line for agricultural inspection (you’re not allowed to carry fruit into California) and that would be impossible to day dream through.
My Dad was coming back from a music job on the weekend one night, from someplace north or Trenton heading toward Philadelphia. But he was following another car, and somehow, the guy in the lead wound up a couple miles from Hershey, PA, before Dad finally passed him, pulled him over, and yelled, “FOLLOW ME!!!” (The guy had somehow gone 100 miles in the wrong direction.)
Forget maps, how about just READING the road signs. If you are going to Palm Springs from the Bay Area, that’s the I-5 south all the way to LA then the I-10 east to PS. To get where they are requires a cock up of the highest magnitude because you’d have to split off the I-5 onto the I-58 east (near Bakersfield) which eventually turns into the I-40 east at Barstow, which is one heck of bad turn as its almost 100 miles north of LA
Vic: If you’re going from the Bay Area to Palm Springs, the last thing you want to do is get tied up in the LA traffic snarl. At Bakersfield you take Cal 58 east to Mojave and then take a series of State highways to hook up with I-15 at Cajon Junction, take the fork at I-215, and pick up I-10 near San Bernardino. Jane evidently picked up I-10 okay but blew right through Palm Springs to Phoenix and then took I-17 north(!) She’s now just south of Black Canyon City, because everybody sees the sign telling them they’re 75 miles from Sedona.

I don’t know the local geography in Nevada, and I’m not clear which direction they were coming from.
Help, please?

They were coming from the west coast, headed to Nevada. They overshot and hit Arizona.

" To get where they are requires a cock up of the highest magnitude …"Something Jane’s never had, I’m sure.
