The way more and more trucks are outfitted these days are NOT pluggerlike. Many of them are looking more and more like mini RVs in the sleeper cabin area. As in mini kitchen, TV, computer station, Even a shower in some of them.
Because of the economy my father-in-law had to start OTR about when he should have been retiring. He lived in Maine and criss-crossed the country Maine to SoCal to FL and back many times. The upside was we got to see him when he was passing by. The only other upside was the accommodations his cab afforded him during those LONG miles away from home.
Even if you wouldn’t ordinarily regard a truck as the most comfortable quarters (particularly for sleeping), I imagine it would be preferable to some motels.

Father and two uncles drove trucks. I drove a powered industrial truck for the Post Office.

You know it is a dangerous job, sitting all day, with little time for exercise. Not a lot of old truckers.
