Buster was on stage with his family’s act starting around age 3. The act ran up against laws banning child performers ion vaudeville. When one official saw Keaton in full costume and makeup, he asked a stagehand how old that performer was. The stagehand shrugged and pointed to the boy’s mother, saying “I don’t know, ask his wife!”
