Christmas as we celebrate it dates from the Victorian period. Prior to that some religions ignored it and it was a work day (as the Puritans) and others, such as Anglicans and Catholics treated it as solemn day for church going. Among the Anglican colonists gifts were given to children and servants (no other trading of Christmas gifts) on Boxing Day, which was the first of the 12 days of Christmas. Yes, trees and decorations should remain up until the last day of Christmas – January 6. Parties, merriment, and weddings occurred during the 12 days after Christmas Day.

When I was kid going to school the Jewish High Holy Days were not given as days of f from school. However they started giving them as there was a shortage of teachers on those days as they would use personal days and enough students did not come to school that no new work cold be taught. There is nothing wrong with giving off from school for Muslim holidays if there are sufficient Muslim teachers and students to affect the school.
