    Actually, infinity and X are not like each other. As triman said, infinity is a concept. X is a substitute for a number that is simply unknown at the present time.

    speaking of numbers.Long long ago I asked my grandma “how many numbers are there?”She said"9 plus a zero. That’s all there are " I was mystified ,but she explained herself so a 5 year old could understand.I will always remember that….

    Actually, numbers are concepts and abstractions too, as is “x”, in its way, truth be told. So little do mathematicians distinguish between all of these that they for instance simply call the real numbers with negative and positive infinity added on with some rules of addition and multiplication the extended real numbers.
