Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for December 24, 2014
Transcript:
Marigold: I am fascinated by your human holiday rituals! Phoebe: I think I'm learning a lot, knowing you. I've developed a whole new understanding of what "rituals" are. I kind of thought they were food. Now I realize I was thinking of "victuals." Marigold: Slabs of cranberry sauce are fascinating in either category.

I’m the only one in the family that prefers discernable individual cranberries in the cranberry sauce. It’s great heated up and used to glaze a pumpkin cheesecake.

The word “victuals” is actually pronounced “vittles,” which is where that spelling comes from. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Sorry, but “victuals” does not rhyme with “rituals.” It’s pronounced “vittles.”

So what are YOUR victual Rituals?

I’m surprised Phoebe even knows the word “victuals,” mispronounced or no.
I’m more surprised she knew and understood this word’s general meaning BEFORE she knew and understood “rituals.”

I have enjoyed reading this comic series, but I finally had to comment on this strip because I have become frustrated reading some of these episodes. I realize that creating these comics is no easy task, but I have noticed an incredible number of reruns for this comic in 2014, and it’s sorely disappointing to see the same series of strips re-used to cover the season it was originally written for when one is expecting a new story to be added to the adventures of Phoebe and Marigold :(
That having been said, keep up the good work, I love how you fit references to real life things like video games and MLP!

English is such a broken, cobbled together mess. I’ve heard it’s a nightmare to learn for non-native speakers.

Phoebe is too young to remember the Beverly Hillbillies, which is the only place I ever heard that word, and I never would have known it was spelled “victuals”.

My mother made a South Florida cranberry sauce with ground whole oranges and cranberries.
