The federal deficit doubled during Bush’s eight year stint. And a good part of the bailout money (for the auto industry, etc..) was already planned before he left office.
If you check your facts, you will find Republicans historically have more deficit spending than Democrats, even though there is much misinformation to the contrary.
Oh,sskelton, the truth? How foolish of you to mention the truth. Lots of folks here are WAY too sophisticated to believe the truth. They have AGENDAS and those don’t really allow for truth unless you varnish it up to look the way they like it.
To help pay for the rescue, the government should raise taxes on the wealthy, Warren Buffett suggested. “I’m paying the lowest tax rate that I’ve ever paid in my life,” he said. “Now, that’s crazy.” -on the Charlie Rose Show 10/5/08
Ever stop to think about what we could have done with 4 trillion dollars if we hadn’t invaded a country based on lies, which has accomplished nothing? Perhaps instead give incentives to keep jobs here? Create a sustainable health care plan? Develop and export renewable energy technologies?
Taxes are at their lowest rate in decades, so it is disappointing that a clever golf comic has devolved into the tired rants about high taxes and other discredited talking points.
Where are these lowest tax rates, DuffMan? Certainly not in New York, California, Michigan, New Jersey or here in Illinois. A special tax on shampoo and toothpaste went up +525% on Sept 1st. Downtown Chicago has a sales tax rate of 11.25% - highest in the US. Opposition to Overtaxing-because-of-overspending isn’t a “tired rant”, you’re one of the privileged half who don’t pay.
Oh, by the way, Dewey, that Hope button was made in the same Chinese factory as the Census hats.
FEDERAL taxes are the lowest in a long time. STATES are taxing to make up for it. Started with Reagan being Mr. Taxcut on the federal level but not eliminating any mandated programs the states HAD TO RUN so the local/state tax programs had to make up for it. Been snow-balling ever since. Now for the reason they are so high: WHICH PROGRAMS ARE YOU GOING TO CUT? Don’t give us a crock about how high they are, tell us what you want to cut. Be specific. TEA party BS about we want to cut doesn’t solve anything and has no honesty. We all would like a tax cut, but you best be sacrificing specific things so you can stand up to the same heat as the people who actually do the job have to face.
Are taxes too high, too low, or just right? Most people believe that taxes are too high or just right. But the correct answer is that taxes are too low. Add up what we pay in taxes (Federal, State, and Local) , subract what we want from government and you are left with a negative number. We have 2 choices (and only 2). We could raise taxes to the level where they belong. Or, and this is the harder choice, we can cut back on government programs. Your biggest Federal expenses are for Social Security and Medicare. From the State and local level the top costs are education and infrastructure. The reason option 2 is the harder choice is that nobody can agree on what services to cut. Everybody wants to keep the services that benefit them personally and only want to cut services that benefit the other guy.
I love how people complain about the cost of the wars. Both wars combined, cost less than welfare does. Welfare programs have been proven to not work. Never have, never will. Unless you count making people into gov’t slaves as a successful program.

I’m surprised their salaries are high enough that the taxes would be a “giant number”!
(If every bird in the country had its own Social Security Number, the numbers would have to be REALLLLLY long!!)

The truth will set you free, but the politicos and pundits don’t want to pay that high a price.

Hey RCMInor,
Ever stop to think about what we could have done with 4 trillion dollars if we hadn’t invaded a country based on lies, which has accomplished nothing? Perhaps instead give incentives to keep jobs here? Create a sustainable health care plan? Develop and export renewable energy technologies?
Naw, best to resort to name calling.
