I have a Tulikivi soapstone fireplace. They take the square footage of your house to determine how many pounds of soapstone needed to heat your house. 7500 pounds for my 2500 sq ft.
My brother and a friend have wood stoves with catalytic converters and heat exchangers. A small stove the size of an oven heats the entire house. My parents had soapstone, and it is mainenance free, as it is a passive solution. But the hi-tech approach makes for a small stove, and the converter burns creosote in the smoke, extracting more heat from the fire, and greatly reducing the smoke emitted.

It heats the whole house and only requires a small forest to provide the wood.
