^disagree. I’ve coached enough sports to know that kids are out there to play. When they don’t have the adults, they manage to win no matter what the score – if they’re keeping score at all. I’ve watched my kids play pick up games (their friends still play them in the field behind our house), and each comes back convinced that they won – which seems to suit them all pretty well.
I’ve coached for years, if the scoring is high enough or close enough then what cdward stated is true, however, the kids do pay a lot closer attention to the score than some people seem to think. I don’t see anything wrong with that. Games are about keeping score, winning and losing, but also doing your best and playing hard even when the odds are long. Kids, particularly the young kids, just have just a range of difference in their capability. A few kids will score most of the goals, and with some kids its a miracle to get a single goal. (I strive to create those miracles, and for the most part I have been successful.)
Let Ann Coulter coach the team. There would be blood on the ground and veins in their teeth. They wouldn’t care if they won or not so long as they eviscerated the enemy.

Would you wipe out competition and have them sit on the couch the rest of their lives? Oh wait—–

Joe, lindonc, and cdward have found the hidden truth that all kids are exactly the same. (an attempt at gentle(ish) sarcasm)

When we play adult pick-up hockey, each goal matters, but he total does not. No one keeps score overall.
