House about a 1/2 mile down the road had 5 or 6 gazing balls in the yard along with a lot of other ‘decorations’. An F3 came through last summer and they haven’t been replaced since. What a loss……..
I’d forgotten that nowadays you can get all kinds of gaudily decorated, ugly ceramic or bright-colored glass ones…and the Pennys probably had one (or six) of those.
But in their original, simple, mirrored, Christmas-globe form, usually resting on a plain concrete pedestal….they were a staple of the Illinois neighborhoods (not far from Crustwood) where all the aunts and uncles on my mother’s side of the family lived.
They’re called “gazing balls” cos they’re supposed to reflect the the sky and inspire gazing into.
….shoulda gorilla-glued it to the pedestal, Burl……after you screwed the pedestal onto a steel rod set 36" down in cement (call Miss Utility first!!)……’course then, that inspires midnight practice with a baseball bat!!

It’s not the gazing ball everyone is tired of….
Gazing balls can be beautiful….The sight of Burl in his skivvies dashing out into the driveway to bring in the Sunday paper….
The shrill voices of the Darwin sisters commenting on everybody else’s decor….Not so much.
A gazing ball, a lawn chair, a plastic flamingo….every time something disappears…it’s a little message…But it falls on deaf ears.
