If “Deliverence” is the type of thing that happens when cousins marry, what’s gonna happen when clones marry?
But of course now they’ll start a “Same DNA Marriage” movement.
Oh, give me a clone,
Of my own flesh and bone,
With the Y chromosome changed to X
Ans when she is grown,
My very own clone,
She will be of the opposite sex.
Clone, clone of my own
With the Y chromosome changed to X,
And when we’re alone
Since her mind is my own,
We’ll be thinking of nothing but sex.
“Marrying my clone sounds risky. What happens if I decide I can’t get along with myself”…
Then it’s time to clone again!
Just think when those awkward love/hate moments pop up, the second clone can fight with the first one. Your original stays neutral and oversee’s the maylay. Only then will the original be able to truely enjoy the peace of being one and the glory of being a trinity of “cool”!
“Somewhere John Varley is saying his [sic] wrote this short story already.”
David Gerrold’s book The Man Who Folded Himself had a time-traveling protagonist who had sex with alternate past and future versions of himself. He referred to it as “complex masturbation”.
When I was shopping for lit classes in college, I went to the bookstore, looked for books I liked, then signed up for the class. My college career was winding down when Varley came on the scene.

Maybe we need a constitutional amendment.

Actually, I’ve never read any of Varley. Does he use this theme in a lot of his stories?

In that case, John, I think you’d be beside yourself.

Thanks, Doc. I think your college reading list was probably more interesting than mine!

Gerrold got the idea from Heinlein’s remarkable short story “All You Zombies…”
