Ah, Little Dog’s introduction to gophers, or is that a mole? He is lucky he is not a horse, he would have broken a leg!

I think it’s a mole.

I know someone who can get that mole removed.

But moles have large claws - I don’t see any on the creature in the strip (or on Little Dog either, for that matter).
