So as not for the apteryx to get the idea to look at its reflection in the lake and see how ugly it is.

Yes, it took me a few minutes to get the joke! :)

As far as we know, this apteryx might be the Brad Pitt of apteryxeses. Maybe he’d look in the water and say “Egad, I’m even more handsome than I thought…!”

To a male warthog, nothing is more beautiful than a female warthog…

What did they have to worry about? Isn’t an apteryx a fightless bird?

Yes, sometimes the problem is a slow hearer or reader, but if a joke has to be explained because a number of people don’t get it, it usually means it is not a very good joke.

Or else it’s a very subtle one: on the level of satire. Jonathan Swift’s jokes, especially “A Modest Proposal”, weren’t very funny either, but people are still talking about them.

Considering the apteryx’s approach is the impetus for the snake to cut off the turtle in mid-explanation of how to see what you (whether you’re a turtle, snake or apteryx) look like, I don’t see why anyone would have any trouble understanding what the “act of mercy” was. Nothing subtle or obscure about it.
