Sometimes they do it on purpose because the line is shorter on that side of the pump. I’ve watched people stretch the hose across the top of the trunk, causing scratches in the paint job, then stand there and curse because they have to hold the nozzle in place forcibly.
@ Kyle Robert: It’s like writing the date in a new year; you do fine for the first few weeks and then stop concentrating on it, so you unconsciously drop back to the previous year. If you’ve had a car with the fuel filler on one side for a long time and then get a new car with the cap on the other side…
Consider the multiple-car family. Sometimes you’re using the left-hand car, and other times it’s the righty. Besides, when pulling out of traffic into a gas station, how clear is your thinking?
OK this is a pet peeve of mine. On the instrument display of every car, there is a little symbol that tells you on which side the fuel fill is. Just look at it people!

And that is why, for the last 15+ years, they have that little arrow on the gas gauge telling you what side of the car has that cover.

Ah, you beat me to it. I confess I learned this only in the last two years, though.

I could see this, like, the first time fueling a new car, but do people really forget which side the gas goes in?

Tell me why auto makers can’t agree on such a simple concept as which side to use? Is that asking too much of them?

I’ve been at a loss since Ford moved it away from the windshield.

Ok, I’m not in the in crowd. What the heck is the joke and what are those weird orange rectangles on the left?
