PRESS ON! Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not. Nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not. Unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not. The world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. - Calvin Coolidge

That’s quite a mouthful to say from a U.S. President who was nicknamed “Silent Cal.”

Maybe he just wrote it.

Bad banking practices among many were the reason. Drought. Folks stopped buying things. Stocks crashed due to bad investments and stock manipulation. Less world trade due to high tariffs. American isolationism. It was world wide not just the US.Coolidge could nothing about it. No presidential authority to do anything. He had no power over the banking industry.Changes were made to allow the government to control such things. And we know how much folks like to gripe about those controls. And if you think Roosevelt ending the Depression (my father remembered it well) you are only partially right. WWII ended it. A note in history says if FDR had spent as much on the New Deal as he did in WWII. WWII would have probably never happened. The world would have recovered and Hitler would have never seized power.

That was to win votes. That was the problem. There were no policies. No checks. No balances. No FED involvement with checks on the worldwide implications. Everyone left to their own devices all in search of the next riches. Not just republican or democrat….an overall failure of the system globally. Remember this was world wide depression not just the US. A world wide failure of the system. US had it bad but consider Germany. A 12 million mark bill was worthless. How much do you think 12 millions marks would be today.Chuck you are right….folks forget the past and say it wont happen again. With today’s protection it wont. Too much is tied into each other world wide. A world wide depression may never happen but don’t think it cant occur to a single country.Coolidge and his party got stuck with the blame, any other president or party would have got stuck with it too.

Great dragon drawing, Gavin. To heck with politics. The lesson you illustrate is valuable and can lead to success. Nice going.
