Opal must not have a drivers license.

She DOES drive herself places. As does her sister when she visits Opal.

I’d rather be dead than go to a fabric store.

Do not, do not, do not understand this. And yet I know women who do it all the time. I know women who won’t come to church if their husbands are out of town. Are they afraid they are going to be hit on? It’s not a bar. I never understood the whole “joined at the hip” concept of marriage, especially when it usually seems so one-sided—i.e., doing what the woman wants because what the man wants to do is “stupid.”

I hope Earl has made some plans for dying. Like a will.

Remember when he took Opal to the mall and forgot to bring her home? He could drop them off and go to the mall for an ice cream treat with the grandson. [Opal can drive, but she can’t remember where the fabric store is located.]

A fate worse than death…

Opal just likes to make Earl Miscible…

Opal probably wants Earl to carry the fabric bolts she picks out — so she doesn’t have to carry all six of the possibilities while she’s looking through the others.

I love taking my wife to the fabric store. They have free coffee there for the guys; I figure for every $1000 that I spend there, I get $100 worth of coffee.

I prefer the grocery store.

I think that the reason that Earl associates death and the trip to the Fabric Store is more about him having to spend time with both Opal and Pearl.

The whole point is that it will take hours, and, hours, and, hours… for them to make their purchase, that’s if they do make a purchase, while Grampa waits, and waits, and waits…. His only hope is that there is a hardware store close by. My sister-in-law and I resemble this so much its uncanny…except that we would only get caught in this situation if we were already out for lunch with a husband in company already.

yes earl there are things much worse than dying. but if you LOOK for the GADGETS in a fabric store you can find some pretty cool items :)

I remember taking my Mom on those trips, having to hang out for hours while she looked at books of patterns, then driving her home after spending a dollar or two, only to HAVING to go back on some impulse later to buy a specific fabric once it was sufficiently ruminated.

Earl’s right: Coming back from running two old women to the fabric store doesn’t get you a hit show on AMC. :-P
