A wind-up Gramophone! Doesn’t even need batteries! What will they think of next?

Try building your own. The Japanese publisher Gakken has released several Edison- and Berliner-style player kits. It’s almost magical, when the sound comes out of a cone you handmade yourself.

I that exact same Victrola. It was my great-grandfather bought it in 1902 and is still in immaculate condition and plays perfectly.

We had this old 78 player when I was a kid in the late 50’s that my parents had bought in the late 40’s early 50’s. I remember those ‘big’ singles that were almost as big as LP’s. The two i distinctly remember was ‘The Theme from the 3rd Man’ and the other one was ‘Boogie Woogie’ by Tommy Dorsey.

I served at a US Navy shore station in Morocco back in 1962. Our janitor brought in an old victrola style player. He wanted to know if we could modify it to play stereo. Of course, we couldn’t but I think we missed a chance to buy an valuable antique.
