I remember the superstar of my younger brother’s Little League; he was the 12 year old who could actually throw a fast curveball. (Don’t remember his last name, 40 years on, but his first name was Tim; hadn’t thought about this for years.).Kid had elbow problems before he so much as threw a pitch for the high school team, and effectively he was washed up at 14.

It’s more the year round nature of playing a single sport. Kids specialize too early and play too much.
