Kevin: I dropped the purple crayon and it went under there. Miss Bliss: I'll get the broom. Alice: Kevin! Alice: The purple is the best crayon! The paper isn't torn and it hasn't been chewed on. Alice: It doesn't have other crayon schmutz on it! It's pristine! And now it's under there? Miss Bliss: Was this it? Kevin: Hard to tell. Alice: KEVIN!

I’ve heard of a purple people eater, but a purple crayon eater? That’s another story.

Alice, you aren’t the boss of Blisshaven! Kevin just dropped the crayon; it was an accident. Okay?

If purple is the best crayon, how is it’s paper not torn, and how can it not have been chewed? Alice’s stated paean to the purple crayon makes no sense.

Hey, any crayon that is in pristine condition is elevated to the level of best crayon. Just like a car, it loses value as soon as you use it. That’s why we like cars so much when we get older.

When I was just out of HS I got a friend a box of crayons in her favorite color: purple. I did this by buying 16 boxes and taking the purple from each, and then carried those other 15 boxes around with me until recently, 30 years later, they were finally used up by my grand-nieces.

Oddly enough, I can remember being fixated on a beloved blue crayon when I was four. It was grand! GLO-ree-us ! Though neon crayons probably hadn’t been invented in 1939, to me it had a neon glow. It wasn’t pristine, but I wouldn’t have wanted to use it much, because then it would be gone!I forget whether I was able to wangle it away from my playmate – that part is lost in the mists of the ages. But I do feel Alice’s pain.
