Rick: Pregnant! I can't get over it! You're sure? Joanie: The doctor seemed quite certain. Rick: Joanie, I have to ask you a question. And I don't want you to get mad. Joanie: Why would I get mad? Rick: Well, the last few months I've been pretty preoccupied and wrapped up in my work, so I haven't always remembered everything I should, y'know? Joanie: What are you getting at, Rick? Rick: Joanie, was this something we decided to do? Joanie: Relax. It got by both of us.

I never got the feeling Rick was happy with the idea of being a father and never really showed Jeff a lot of attention or affection while he was growing up, but rather, had a very antagonistic attitude towards “the boy.” I think his lack of happiness over the whole prospect began to show here in this strip.

I wasn’t reading the strip at this point, and now I’m kind of glad. Always wondered why Jeff turned out to be such a self-involved egotist; now I begin to understand.-On the other hand, I’m glad Rick didn’t question whether Joannie might have had a lover who actually did the deed…

Words like “Honey, lets make a baby” or “So it is agreed that we should start trying to have a family” would be words that you would remember since they are words that will forever change your life and your checking account balance.
