I thought the character was named Sherman, unless it was changed to Shermy to placate Southern newspapers.

Violet was “let go” because she was too easily confused with Lucy. This strip ain’t big enough for both of us, kid! Shermy probably was too bland—which is Charles’s job—and not distinctive enough.Darned lawyers always make reading the comics more difficult!
