I doubt the “university teacher” story, mainly because the Spanish alphabet contains several letters that the English one doesn’t have, most notably, “ñ.”

It’s interesting that the lady from Colombia didn’t include all the letters in the Spanish alphabet – the double L, the double R and the N with the tilde accent. (caps used to keep the L from looking like a one, and to make them all consistent).
