The real question now is, “Exactly at what point did the VR sim start running?” Was it about when Nick tried to take over the drone? Or, was there never a drone to start with?
I’m guessing that it started when “Doctor Darling” woke up in the institute with Dr. Ao looking worried. Given that we’ve seen Ramshambler in the ring, it is VERY likely that their time in that city where Moustachio destroyed that mall and they went to a potluck in the basement of a church was real. Given that the things that followed included an institute that was very different from the one Tigerlily and Emogene escaped from, Sweetheart meeting the late Captain Bram and the whole, left a fire door open leading to the end of the world. I’d say the VR started then.
