TV: ...And finally, this report of a study in England where after 20 years of research... It was concluded that the combination of smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, a diet of fatty foods and never exercising will lead to a shorter life. ...And, no, I'm not kidding. Captain Eddie: Uh... Why'd it take 'em 20 years t' figyah that out? Flo: 'Cuz they couldn't get any funding fah 21 yeahs.

If itās so obvious, why is it such a popular lifestyle? The cynicism may be misplaced.

In case it wasnāt clear as intimated in the cartoon, this was an actual news report from about a month ago.

After smoking for 25 years (3 packs a day) I quit because cigarettes went up to Ā¢50 per pack. Wish someone would pay me for my 25 year study. I guess capitalism is itās own reward.

Iāve heard anecdotal evidence that getting shot in the head can shorten your life too. I wonder how many millions of tax dollars itāll take to study that for a couple of decades to prove it!

plus4, youāre right. I can think of several such studies about topics that most of us wouldnāt think twice about.
treered almost 15 years ago
so the studies that said wine is good for you or chocolate is good for you orā¦ were funded by wine makers, chocolate makersā¦ whoād āve thoughtā¦

From an old, old āFrank and Ernestā strip:
āA recently-completed $5 million government study shows that you can make pretty good money from a $5 million government study!ā
(Iām paraphrasing a bit ā itās got to be almost 40 years now.)

Capānās cat ronald. Silence is a rare thing for him.

I read an article like that not long ago. A study showing that kids are obese through a lack of exercise and eating between meals too much. Arenāt you thrilled with what our tax money goes to?
aerwalt almost 15 years ago
Can you imagine the HOO-HAH if the opposite results were reported?
DarthSequitur almost 15 years ago
Actually, Eddie does only two of the four: smoking and drinking. Iād like to see you wrestle lahbstah traps out of the water regularly, and while we donāt see him eat much, his diet (as a generic fisherman) is probably high in fish which is āreportedā to be good for heart health. And BTW, I take second to none in my disdain for the Nutrition Nazis.

What I find surprising is that if you do all of those bad things it only shortens your life by an average of 12 years. Granted thatās a lot of time, but if the life-expectancy in the UK is something like 75 years old youād still live to be 63ā¦.Then again, at my age itās easy to say Iād rather life fast and die young. Iām sure when Iām 62 I really wonāt feel like dying yetā¦

And if it aināt researched, it aināt true! But in this country, why bother ā they canāt afford to teach science in schools and nobody believes any of the findings anyway.
Hey Wyatt ā Iām 62 and looking forward to many more years of dancing ā which I will do til I drop.

Iām 72 and still enjoying pizza and chocolate and gin too- but it ia all about moderation. I do an hour of mostly free weights (5-15#) every other day and I hope to continue to keep myself on track. Iām always looking for activities for the alternate days ;-) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~and yes, the āstudiesā we hear on the news are usually just as lame as that one, while they still want more taxes :-(
freeholder1 almost 15 years ago
Moderation must be in the state of Bliss. Everyone says we need to be in it.
bmonk almost 15 years ago
If we must exercise moderation in all things, does that apply to moderation also?

Right up there with the $2 million study a couple of years ago that came to the conclusion there was a link between drugs and crime.
