The Holmes and Watson version works better because Holmes asks Watson “and what does that tell you?”.

The only problem with this is that tents have a floor. They would have had to have been rolled out the front of the tent without waking in order for someone to have stolen it. And before anyone says just cut the floor off, why would anyone steal a tent without the floor?
