Good toon.I see idiots almost everyday on my to work texting while driving. They swerve, brake hard and sit in traffic while the car ahead of them took off a minute ago. Very annoying and dangerous. Now this trend might be even worse.Make the penalties similar to a DUI and I bet it’d be rare to see a person doing this.

In Alberta it’s called distracted driving, and there are penalties for it, but I still see people yammering away.

My biggest fear are the tailgaters and the aggressive drivers who are trying to speed through traffic anyway they can. It is fun though when I usually end up passing them after a while.

A few years ago, two high-school males were speeding up my street, lost control, hit a boulder and flipped over. Hearing the noise, I rushed out. The two crawled out of the wreck, somehow un-scathed. Shook up, but no cuts. A week later, one of my friends who teaches science at the high school told me that the two were celebrities that week. They were popular, while bragging about what they did. “WOW man! You really TOTALLED that car!”

On a freeway (controlled access highway) going 5 mph slower than the speed limit is 500 TIMES more dangerous than the driver going ten over. The SLOW driver on highways, especially two lane with only rare passing zones, is even MORE likely than that to CAUSE accidents- like head-ons from folks trying to get around them. Going with the flow of traffic is the key to safety.

Cell phones have been illegal here for two years, and still, over 50 % of drivers are on hand-helds. Fortunately texting is a little rarer. But, automakers are working hard on putting more crappy devices in the dash “display” to distract drivers. Yep, safety first. The best “self-driving” car, and the only safe one, is the one in front of K-Mart that takes quarters and only goes up and down.

I don’t even have the bluetooth. If it is important they’ll get back to me or I can read the text later. I will look at them if stopped at a light though.
