Adam: Now we let the grill heat for no less than twelve minutes. Clayton: Why twelve? Adam: Hush, padawan. Do not question. This process has been passed down for generations of Newmans. Clayton: Wow. Adam: Almost makes up for the weak chin and the nose, right?

In other words, “I don’t know.” I’ve read a few biological protocols as a scientific lay person and they are filled with instructions that say to heat something at some temp for some number of minutes, but never explain why. The only reason why according to those in the know turns out to be “we tried several different times and temps and this was the most optimal for whatever reason” or “the physics is really complicated; just trust us on this”.

You might want to close the lid while it warms up, Adam. Five minutes or so is all it should take…

I’m sorry Adam but nothing makes up for the nose. My family uses charcoal grills, it takes a little more guesswork but you can’t beat the flavor.

“Passing down” means providing some type of knowledge, and “Because we’ve always done it that way” is the worst answer in the universe!
