A couple of seasons ago, the NFL started to promote premium seats on the ground level as close to the side lines as NFL regulations would allow them to be. The seats would, of course have been even with the end zones, since most of the sidelines were reserved for the teams. I don’t think anything came of it, perhaps because most fans realized that they would have been paying mega-bucks for what really would have been - if you were serious about watching a football game - the worst seats in the stadium.
In Shakespeare’s day, wealthy patrons could buy seats that were right on the stage with the actors. There are recorded instances of the audience telling the performers to keep it down, so they could chat with their friends.
You think the yuppie in the row ahead of you talking on his cell phone through the whole game is annoying? You have no idea…
